FAQs

How many 14ers are there in Colorado?

The purist would say 54. The peak bagger would say 58. I subscribe to Gerry Roach's (author of the 14er Bible) take of 55, which includes the 54 purist peaks + El Deinte. It's hard for me to justify not counting a 14er peak that is a part of one a great 14er traverses (El Diente > Mount Wilson). Thus, our 14er summit date poster, photo poster, and 14er peak outlines shirt displays a unique mountain profile for each of the 55 summits.

Which was your favorite 14er?

Yikes, now that's a tough one. I have so many great memories in the mountains of Colorado, it's difficult to pin down one peak as my favorite, but here goes: My favorite peaks are the so-called difficult peaks. The ones that strike some fear in your gut when you research trip reports on 14ers.com. The ones that make your palms sweat when packing your bag. The ones that take you to the edge of your comfort zone, and then beyond. The peaks that stand out to me in those regards are a who's who of 14er summits; Capitol, Little Bear, The Crestone's, The Bells; you know them. If I had to pick my favorite 14er though, the peak has to encompass something magical, some distinct element that is unique, even among 14ers. I venture to say that Mount of the Holy Cross (most notably sleeping under the stars near Notch Mountain and ascending the summit via Halo Ridge) was my favorite 14er.
